Jackpot

It’s a little rough to the touch Some of the edges don’t line up flush It ain’t much to look at but it’s all ours We don’t trust the roll of the dice We cut once but we measure twice What we have isn’t written in the stars Oh, you and me babe We got a love that’s handmade Bit by bit it’s taking shape But I know that it’s worth the wait And if it takes a little longer That just makes it a little stronger And there’s nothing that I’d trade or wouldn’t give up for this handmade love There ain’t a store sells what we need We got to grow it straight from the seed There’s no guarantee what the harvest brings But we labored ‘neath the summer sun So a long winter don’t scare me none We’ll have enough to last us through til spring (CHORUS) At the end of a hard-earned day All the joys and sorrows fade Tomorrow is a clean slate I can’t wait to see what we’re gonna make (CHORUS)

about

My new EP Jackpot is a miniature study of the challenges that writing love songs presents to a songwriter. It is nearly impossible to fully explore the totality of love within the constraints of a single composition. The most powerful love songs are moments, scenes from different points on the same storyline, set to whatever best matches the mood of the vignette.

The young, idealistic lovers making a new life together in “Handmade.” The spurned lover who trusted his heart only to come “crashing back to Earth” in “Nothing But A Liar.” The incredulous husband who can’t believe his luck in the title track are all different characters in unique situations. But each is trying to make some sense of love, despite all they have yet to experience.

Just as love feels different at different times, the diverse narratives on Jackpot are mirrored in a myriad of musical approaches. Recorded at various times with different ensembles, each song presents a unique sonic personality—from breezy pop, a rootsy, anguished waltz, or the spare, toe-tapping bounce of Johnny Cash’s Sun Records years. Taken together, this trio of compositions present a rollicking, fiery, and tender exploration of what is perhaps our most widely-shared emotion.
